Commitment to eliminating plastics scores national award for A. Perry

A plan put in place by hardware manufacturer A. Perry to dramatically reduce its reliance on plastic packaging by the end of the year has scored the company a national industry award.

The West Midlands firm is on course to reduce the total volume of plastic in its packaging by 30 per cent by the end of 2022, and will replace all non-recyclable plastic packaging with a 100 per cent recyclable alternative, also by the end of this year.

The DIY Week Awards praised the efforts and progress so far, handing over the Sustainability Initiative of the Year trophy at the prize-giving ceremony held at the Tower Hotel in London.

The judges chose A. Perry above fierce competition, noting that they were impressed by a 'very impressive and authentic commitment' to integrating a sustainable strategy across the business.

The initiatives include making environmentally-friendly changes to the packaging of its entire range of 400 products from ironmongery to tools and specialist equestrian items. So far, this has included removing plastic windows from boxed products, removing lamination on product tags, replacing plastic tapes and ties with paper alternatives and eliminating all nonessential plastic packaging within boxed and carton products.

Steve Perry, Marketing Director at A. Perry said that the reduction in plastic use is all part of the fourth-generation family firm’s “reduce, reuse, recycle and replace” eco initiative.

He said: “We are delighted to have won this award in the face of such strong competition. It is validation from our peers that our efforts are worthwhile and that we are making a positive difference.

“With more than 400 products that our initiative will directly affect, it is an incredibly ambitious target but with everything we have put in place, we believe that we shall be able to achieve this. Hopefully this award will inspire others to challenge themselves to do more for our planet.”

The DIY Week judges added: "A Perry’s very impressive entry demonstrated an authentic commitment to integrating a sustainable strategy across the business, including packaging and aligning customers with the implications of the plastic tax."

A. Perry is the market-leader and the UK’s largest supplier and manufacturer of hinges, ironmongery, chain and threaded bar to customers across the world.
