FAQ's
Q: What is the difference between short link and long link chain?
A: Short link chain (also called close link) has links approximately 3× the wire diameter in length — it's stronger, heavier and used for load-bearing applications like towing and lifting. Long link chain has links around 5× the wire diameter, making it lighter and more suitable for general-purpose, barrier and decorative use.
Q: What chain do I need for security?
A: For security applications, use case hardened chain — the hardening process makes it resistant to bolt cutters and hacksaws. Perry stocks case hardened security chain in various diameters. Pair it with a case hardened padlock for maximum protection.
Q: What size wire rope do I need for a balustrade?
A: 3mm or 4mm galvanised or stainless steel wire rope is most commonly used for balustrade infill. You'll also need thimbles, grips and turnbuckles (tensioners) to complete the installation. Building regulations may apply — check with your local authority.
Q: Can I buy chain by the metre?
A: Yes — all Perry chain is available cut to length, by the metre. We also supply pre-cut and packaged lengths for trade counter display through our PerryPack range.
